Firstly, your Clan rank. Press L to open the Clan screen and then look in the upper right corner. This is your Clan Tier. Each Tier gives you more Party Size limit. For example, as a Tier 3 clan, I get an additional +15 Party Size, allowing me to add a further 15 soldiers to my party limit. This is constantly growing as your Clan Tier gets higher.

If you want to join in as a vassal, you should first increase your clan tier and reach the required tier to become a lord. So, the best way you can join a kingdom in Bannerlord would be to: Gather enough Renown to reach Clan Tier 1 or 2. Approach either a lord of the kingdom (to become a mercenary) or the faction leader (to become a vassal).
