If i remember right you need to stop in Elona to pick up the Skimmer because you need the skimmer to get up to the platform that takes you to the area were the Jackal is. Anyway the thing about our mounts and why you can not use skins on other mounts like the jackal skin on your raptor skin and so on is because the mounts are different.
Griffon makes lots of the Skyscale collections effortless, but that's the lowest benefit of getting Griffon. Definitely the best mount in my opinion by far, with Jackal being best land-only mount. Skyscale has its benefits, but more often than not I am only using it to reach a higher starting point for my Griffon with Bond of Faith.

Regardless, it shouldn’t take too long between a PoF hero point train that touches the mastery insights and a few easy collections and story stuff.
If you care about your mount being flexible and all-purpose, you should use the jackal more than the raptor. It doesn't need any kind of rework or buff. The raptor and jackal have extremely similar movement speeds on flat ground. The raptor is 4% faster than the jackal if they're both spamming their movement skill. Sargol Thunderer. Southsun Torpedo. Raptor can't even dash there. Jackal can jump as high as he wants and reset the fall damage by using the dodge skill. Jackal can cover huge gaps much like raptor, and even go right through minor obstacles. Jackal looks better, and its footsteps sound better as well. Jackal is easier to maneuver in tighter spaces.
