Broken LCD Screen. If the LCD is broken, then it might appear that the camera is not turning on. Press the shutter button and listen for the sound to make sure it is not the screen. The button called "AE lock" is active after the exposure is set "locked", then can be activated again when the button is held down and a picture is taken. When you release the button the camera will re-evaluate the exposure. Also, programmed a button for one shot-servo. If I am in one shot it only switches to servo while I am holding the button.
Remove the battery, turn the camera on and let it sit overnight. That will drain the internal battery and should get you back to factory new. After a bit of research, I discovered that the 18-105 kit lens is not well made and has problems making a firm contact with the camera. Many times when the camera refused to take a picture (even if I went totally manual), I could get it to work by gently tightening the lens a bit.

With my 5Dmk4 bodies, if you are not 1/2 depressing the shutter button, there is no continuous autofocus. With the R cameras, even when the camera is hanging by my side I hear the focus motor continue to wildly engage, so the quick fix is just to turn the camera off. Shutter button works.
